Network Access

Tips on Connecting to the College Network

Before arriving on campus:

  • Make sure you have installed the most recent update for your operating system.
  • Make sure your network settings DNS entry is blank.
  • Make sure you have installed the most recent virus definitions for your virus protection program.
  • Known System Configurations which prevent access to the Franklin & Marshall network:
  • DNS is configured manually, or set to a static IP address. The College uses dynamic IP addressing. You must configure your system to Using DHCP Server, with no IP address.
  • A firewall is turned on. Firewalls must be turned off.

Note: Once you have completed your registration with Campus Manager, you can turn the firewall back on.

Bridging is turned on. You must turn off bridging.

  • In your CONTROL PANELS, open your NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Locate the bridging icon. You can disable the bridge in one of two ways:
  • Right click the bridging icon, and select DISABLE from the contextual menu.
  • Double-click the bridging icon, and click once on the DISABLE button.
  • AD/Spyware prevents the scanning process from occurring. You must remove all AD/Spyware from your computer before using the College network.

What do I do if...

I plug in my computer, turn it on, and I cannot get on Campus Manager, i.e., scanning does not start and/or the registration page does not appear:

  • Make sure your network settings DNS entry is blank.Make sure your ethernet cable is properly attached. Unplug it, count to 3, and plug it back in.
  • Make sure your have launched your web browser.
  • Make sure your network settings are set to use ethernet as your active connection method.
  • Make sure your network settings DNS entry is blank.
  • Make sure bridging is turned off.

My web browser does not access the network registration pages:

  • Quit or Close your web browser and relaunch the application.
  • Make sure your network settings DNS entry is blank.
  • Empty the cache in your web browser.

Note: In most browsers look for an Empty Cache button in your Preferences/Internet Tools/Settings options. In Internet Explorer for Windows, from the TOOLS menu, select INTERNET OPTIONS. Click once on the General Tab, and in the middles section of the window, look for the DELETE FILES button.

On restart after a successful registration, my browser returns to the registration pages:
Empty the cache in your web browser.

On restart after a successful registration, my browser returns to the scanning pages but never finishes the process:
Turn off firewalls.

Network Configuration & Settings

Username format:

The short name format is the first initial and a maximum of seven letters of the last name. As an example, we will use the fictitious student named Ima Student. Her short name is: istudent

The long name (also known as the preferred email address) for each account utilizes all the characters in a name. The structure for the long name is the first name, followed by a period (.) and then the
last name --> firstname.lastname. Using the above example, Ima's long name is: ima.student

The full email address to be given to people outside F&M, used on business cards or elsewhere, is this format: long.name@fandm.edu

Or in Ima's case: ima.student@fandm.edu

Mail Host:

email.fandm.edu

SMTP Host:

email.fandm.edu

Domain Name Server (DNS) address:

155.68.1.100

The college uses dynamic IP addressing:

Using DHCP Server

Directory Services:

ldap.fandm.edu
search base: cn=users,dc=fandm,dc=edu
